Dafu Deyl - Hyrule OCT

Dafu Deyl: As overconfident as he is flammable, and as threatening as he is tall.



Alright, I haven't forgotten about #VanityofIdols and the spectator art I want to do for it, but while I was looking around for new OCTs to join after VoI, I found this. I started working on a character for that, very casually with the distant deadline, but then I started brainstorming with my brother.

Somewhere between me wondering what I was going to call my little Deku-guy and snowballing to skits revolving around his over-the-top-ness, we decided he was totally awesome. Then my brother was kind of... insistent that I finish this up as soon as I could and post it. So... Here I am.

I meant to get this and the mini-contest done, too, which is why this is up so early, but, uh, I didn't finish the mini-contest. I still got the profile done, so I figured I might as well submit that now instead of waiting.

ANYWAY:

History:

His father was a Deku merchant, and when he was old enough, Dafu would accompany him in his travels. This gave Dafu exposure to many different cultures and creatures, and by extension, their local folklore. From a young age, he dreamed of obtaining fame and glory, and the stories he heard has only encouraged him to pursue his idea of a legendary hero. Upon hearing about this tournament, Dafu headed to Hyrule as quickly as he could.

Personality:

Dafu is full of enthusiasm and energy, however, his eagerness for action makes him a bit impatient. He often acts with little to no thought, and frequently overestimates his own abilities. If he can get himself to stop for five minutes, he can usually come up with a plan, if only for the short term.

While he often has a moment of frozen terror on seeing enemies larger than him, he quickly pushes that aside (legendary heroes don’t feel fear, after all!) and will push forward with even more intensity than before. Not really a good thing, since he doesn’t stop to think before or during his charge.

He knows a little more than one might expect a hyper-active loudmouthed Deku to. His father handled a wide variety of wares, and had all sorts of customers. At the very least, Dafu knows a little about everything... Usually accurate. He has a special interest in tools and weapons, though - less so about creatures.

Also, to make himself seem more great/intimidating, he will brag and exaggerate a lot. Take any story he tells you about slaying vicious monsters with a grain of salt; he’s probably talking about running away from a dog in town square.

Weapons:

Like many Dekus, Dafu can fly from a Deku flower, and can shoot at opponents from his snout. For that purpose, he carries a seed satchel with seven kinds of plants:

Deku Bulb: When thrown to the ground, it quickly sprouts a Deku flower, that he can burrow in and fly from. Due to the speed at which these plants grow, the plants last only a few hours, and the flowers they produce can only stay airborne for a minute.

Deku Seed: Standard Deku ammunition. A hard nut close to the size of a human fist. Deflects surprisingly easy and accurately.

Deku Nut: The flash-bombs we’re so familiar with. Only breaks when thrown at a hard surface.

Ember Seed: A seed that ignites in mid-air when launched at suitable speeds. A little risky for a Deku to use, but Dafu’s all about showing courage through dangerous feats! However, he’s learned the hard way how to shoot it properly.

Gale Seed: The most powerful item in Dafu’s arsenal. When broken, the seed unleashes a strong gust of wind that can blow enemies back, or give Dafu some extra lift in flight.

Scent Seed: Sort of a back-up to the Deku Nut, or to be used with it. When broken, the seed emits a foul, burning stench, that’s strangely attractive to monsters. Sort of like getting skunked or pepper-sprayed if you get it right in your face.

Mystery Seed: The mystery seed gets its powers from the plants it grew around. Dafu picked these up from his father’s wares, and he got those in a trade from someone else. Dafu has no idea where these seeds came from, and thus has no idea what they will do. This seed could function like any of the other seeds in Dafu’s inventory, and possibly some that don’t.

(For funtimes, the opponent can make up the Seed's power! Note that it doesn't have to benefit Dafu, either)

Notably, Dafu is hesitant to use these unless he’s out of options or ammunition for other things.

The first three are standard Deku tools. The other four seeds, Dafu took from his father’s trading route.

(A/N: I kind of based the seed satchel off of Oracle of Ages and Seasons, but I tweaked the powers a little to better function in a tournament setting.)

Other features:

- Dafu can bounce on water up to five times... but then he gets water-logged and sinks. Well... he stops bouncing, and just kind of floats uselessly in the water until he drowns or until someone fishes him out.

- He can spin around, much like Deku Link in Majora’s Mask... but that attack just amounts to a nasty paper-cut. He doesn’t really have the leaves for the Deku warrior technique. This is mostly useful for getting around quickly. Though, he does have a helmet. I reckon you’d feel that if it bashed you in the kneecap.

- Despite the ember seeds, he’s really flammable. He’s afraid of fire, to the point where he forgets to follow up with bravado after freezing in terror.

Final notes:
Yes. Only a bag of Rupees. A mighty hero and traveller of his calibre has NO NEED for a map or compass! He can navigate based on the position of the sun and so on (no he can’t).
And he’s too small to use any of the other weapons effectively.

Artistically, Dafu is looking too pixelly and blurry for my liking up there. :/
Also the seed satchel is pixelly too. Uh. Hope that's okay?
